We see a lot of odd impressions regarding things like book and music distribution (and the like), but more importantly than all of those things, and how they can be important (depending on your situation), it mostly comes down to understanding money management and how it can not only help you assess your risks better, but also how it can prepare everything you aspire towards to be initiated with less error (because there will always be mistakes).
For instance, a book or song, uploaded to a network with a cataloguing fee of anywhere between 25 to 75 United States dollars has to be accounted for in terms of the cost to aggregate and the cost to promote. A bunch of people assume the cost of 25 to 75 dollars (USD) is minimal and therefore, not as much a "shot in the dark" but in reality, you are just a consumer of services with that mentality and nothing more. Be accountable if your goal is profit.
Cost is balanced between facilitation and manufacturing, retail is then adjusted for factors such as competitive pricing (or whatever needs to be adjusted). So you're accounting for cost to yourself (or organization) and cost to the public in order to have growth. Your questions should become apparent ala, "How do we make the 10.00usd, 2500.00usd we invested in this product?", "How do we make back the 25 to 75 dollars spent on cataloguing?" (and the list goes on dependant on your situation).
That's all we can say really, which comes down to the cliche "think things through" that our parents (or Grandparents, or somebody) told us…
